How to Manage Distraction - Wisdom for Confident and Fluent English in 1...

Image
Once, during a friend's birthday party at a small restaurant with live music, I was invited to go up on stage and sing, karaoke style. Bravely, I accepted the challenge, took a few steps towards the microphone and faced the audience of two or three tables. My first thought was, "Oh dear, this is a mistake, I shouldn't be here", closely followed by, "This feels very different from a classroom, where I'm very happy to speak and share what I know." Then the music started and I began to sing, but no one could hear me! I tested the microphone and saw that it was in perfect working order, so I tried again: "Lalaaaaa!" And again, "LaLAAAAAA!" Nothing!  It was as if my voice were just air and the microphone couldn't capture it. Embarrassed, I sat back down, and someone else from the table covered for me, a friend who sings in a choir. She stood up, took the microphone and belted her heart out! (informal - to sing very loudly and with enth

The Nature of Reality for Confident English

Image
The common saying, "Such is life! (in the tropics)" is used when something disappointing or surprising has happened that we need to accept, and it is true that we are not in control of what happens in the world, or of the way others behave, or of what others think. But we are in control, if we choose to be, of how we manage ourselves in the world, the way in which we respond to pleasant and unpleasant events. Becoming skillful, confident and fluent in English is not so much about speaking it perfectly as it is about feeling spacious (not tight), calm (not agitated) and joyful within, treating ourselves first of all, and then others, with kindness, patience, and a friendly, open attitude. This is the nature of reality, and in  this week's video , we'll explore how connecting with deeper aspects of ourselves brings us closer to the way reality is beyond thoughts and concepts, and how this, in turn, helps us experience English in a more spacious, calm and joyful way. There are infinite options we face when things aren't going our way. Suppose you've been trying for a long time, perhaps years, to use English calmly and naturally, but instead, you feel frustrated, anxious or upset when you realise you're still unable to communicate freely and express yourself fluently. One of the options is to nurture the frustration by thinking, "English isn't for me. I can't do this!" Another option is to take a deeper look. To investigate. What is going on? In  this week's video , we do just that.  Let's stop for a few minutes together and invest some time in understanding. Understanding brings clarity. And clarity is priceless. How to Concentrate for More Confident and Fluent English - it's NOT What...

Do you remember anything your parents repeated to you often when you were a child? Mine always used to say, "Never say I can't!", whenever I wanted to give up or stop trying. Their "never say I can't!" forced to me look for alternatives, to be flexible in my thinking, and I'm very grateful to them for that. Some other ways of expressing our determination include: Where there's a will, there's a way I will not rest until... There's no stopping me from... I'll (whatever it is), if it's the last thing I do! I won't take "no" for an answer Wild horses couldn't stop me from... When we're determined to do something, such as become more confident and fluent in English, but we're confronted by doubt, anxiety, resistance, reluctance, discomfort or even displeasure, the best way forward is to stop and see how we can shift our perspective. This week's video talks about just that: how to tap into and become aligned
